Kiwifruit is native to China and originated from the Chinese gooseberry. It became popular in the 1940s and 50s when new cultivars were bred in New Zealand.

They grow on a vine that is as aggressive as Kudzu, needing two prunings a year. The first pruning is in the late spring immediately after pollination. The second is after harvest during the winter.
